State Treasurer Riley Moore on Monday presented a $4,959.38 unclaimed property check to the Town of New Haven, reuniting the town with unused funds.

The check presentation, which took place at Monday evening’s regular town council meeting, is part of a larger effort by Treasurer Moore to raise awareness about unclaimed property in the state of West Virginia.

“We are proud to return this money to the Town of New Haven – its rightful home,” Treasurer Moore said. “In times like these, our towns and local governments need all the resources they can get, and I’m happy we can help New Haven reclaim these unused funds.”

The unclaimed money was found by a State Treasurer’s Office employee conducting regular research in the database for the region. Most of the funds came from a stale-dated check that had not been cashed.

Unclaimed property can include financial accounts or items of value in which the owner has not initiated any activity for a number of years. Despite the use of “property” in the name, real estate is not included. Common examples of unclaimed property include unpaid life insurance benefits, forgotten bank accounts and unused rebate cards.

When the entity overseeing these types of assets cannot locate the owner, the money or properties are submitted to the state.

“Unclaimed property comes in many forms, and sometimes people don’t realize what might be out there in their name,” Treasurer Moore said. “I encourage all West Virginians to use the resources we have available at the State Treasurer’s Office to search for money and property that may belong to them as well.”

West Virginians searching for lost financial assets can visit www.WVTreasury.com and click on the unclaimed property search button on the homepage. They can also visit wv.findyourunclaimedproperty.com or call 800-642-8687.

In addition to finding property, the website can also help you track a claim.

If you find a friend of family member in the system, you can share the information with them by hitting the “share” button and entering their email address. It creates an automatic e-mail from the Treasurer’s Office to the recipient. The email includes the property ID number and instructions on how to file a claim, if the recipient appears to be the rightful owner.
